Photographing Bangkok from CHAR rooftop bar

How to get to CHAR Bangkok, the best time to arrive, where to sit and why it's a great spot for skyline photos and time-lapses.

By Aung Min Thein · · updated

CHAR Bangkok is the rooftop bar of Hotel Indigo Bangkok on Wireless Road, on the 26th floor. For me the height is just right: not too high in the sky, not too close to the ground. Words won't do the view justice — I simply recommend you go and experience it.

I'm not reviewing the bar's food or service here — just sharing what to expect when you go there to take pictures. Opening hours and rules can change, so check with the venue before you go.

How to get there

  • BTS (recommended): take the Green Line to Phloen Chit station. Hotel Indigo is about 1 km away on Wireless Road.
  • Taxi: traffic in downtown Bangkok can be terrible, especially on Friday evenings.
  • Driving: parking is limited, and if there's an event on you almost certainly won't find a space.

Best time to go

Go just before sunset — it's by far the best time of day there. Arrive about 30 minutes before sunset (around 5:45–6 pm). You'll see the city before sunset, then watch the scene change as the sun goes down and the buildings light up.

Where to sit

If you arrive at 5:45 pm you'll probably be one of the first guests, so you can sit anywhere. Choose the front row, middle seat for the best panoramic view of the city — and you're allowed to use a tripod there.

If you can, shoot a time-lapse. In my opinion it's the best way to capture the experience. (Here are my time-lapse tips.)
